There
are many types of wallpaper to choose from today. There are
thin, thick, vinyl fabric backed types of paper. Also, there are
many types of name brands on the market today. Your local
wallpaper supplier or home improvement center should have many
books for you to choose from.
All these
papers have one thing in common, they require a proper amount
of care in processing the wall prior to hanging. This is the
secret of a long lasting quality paperhanging installation.
Proper
sanding, fixing of cracks and lifting seams need to be looked
into prior to sealing the wall. With some papers, if cracks
are not fixed properly they can come through very easily. This
is why all surfaces need to be repaired.
Along with
repairs, sealing the wall is important too. Latex paint is a
water-based product, and the wallpaper glue is a water-based
product. If wallpaper is applied directly onto a wall with latex
paint, it will not adhere. In fact, it will come off due to
the fact that the wallpaper glue soaks the latex paint and softens
it.
Another
common mistake is applying wallpaper directly to new sheet rock.
The glue being a water based product softens the compound material
used to join the sheetrock. By softening it behind the wallpaper,
it comes off the wall within fifteen minutes of application.
In the future if one ever decided to remove and change the paper,
the person pulling off the old paper will pull off the paper
on the sheetrock as well because it was not sealed properly
therefore creating more work in the preparation process.
This is
why we always seal a wall using a size product. Using a professional
grade adhesive is also important in hanging paper. Quality time
in butting all seams and minimizing small pieces is important.
A complete
wipe down and a room is ready for occupancy. Wallpaper is a
nice alternative to paint because of the variety of patterns
that are available today. We recommend a vinyl type sanataze
type wall covering for long life and easy future removal.
